Shopify address checks for PO Boxes and destinations
Quick answer
ShipEdit is not a street-level address validator. Shopify can warn the customer at checkout, and it can flag the address on the order after checkout. If you turn on destination rules, ShipEdit can also reject a later address change to a PO Box, a country you do not ship to, or an address with no shipping rate.
Shopify's own address warnings
In Settings, Checkout, Address collection, you can validate the shipping address at checkout. Shopify shows issues and suggestions when it is confident about the correction. Some countries get more specific suggestions than others. Field checks such as state and postal code still apply even when that setting is off.
After the order exists, the order can show a warning or an error on the shipping address. A warning might delay delivery. An error is likely to, and you cannot mark that address valid until it is fixed. Those warnings are Shopify's. ShipEdit does not create them and does not clear them.
What ShipEdit blocks after checkout
Rules includes Block destination changes we don't ship. It is off until you turn it on. When it is on, a customer address change is refused when:
- The address looks like a PO Box, post office box, or an APO, FPO, or DPO military address.
- The country is not in your shop's ships-to list.
- A draft-order rate check finds no shipping rate for that address and the items on the order.
The customer is told ShipEdit does not ship to PO Boxes or APO, FPO, or DPO addresses, does not ship to that country, or that there is no shipping rate for that address. This does not replay Checkout Functions, and it does not prove the house number exists. It also does not recalculate tax or the shipping charge when a different address is allowed.
WooCommerce is a smaller check
On WooCommerce, ShipEdit can block PO Boxes and military addresses, and it can refuse countries that are outside your shipping zones. It does not run the Shopify draft-order rate check. An address that would move the order into a different shipping zone is refused, and the customer is asked to contact the store. How address changes work on WooCommerce.
FAQ
- Does ShipEdit validate the street address?
- No. Shopify can show address warnings at checkout and on the order. ShipEdit does not replace that. If you turn destination rules on, it rejects PO Boxes and military addresses, countries your shop does not ship to, and addresses with no shipping rate.
- Are destination rules on by default?
- No. Block destination changes we don't ship is off until you turn it on in Rules. It does not replay Checkout Functions.
- Does an address change recalculate tax?
- No. ShipEdit writes the new shipping address onto the order. It does not recalculate tax or the shipping charge.
